The Viking Bar has been closed for a while now which is a shame. It was an iconic landmark near the West Bank campus of the University of Minnesota.

Dwight Demaine, Dentist

A perfect 'D' post for today's ABC Wednesday. Not only is Dr. Demaine a dentist but he has turned this Art Deco building in south Minneapolis into his office. What a guy!

Not sure what this graffiti is doing on an annex to the old 'A' mill in Minneapolis. Are they swimming toward the door?

Schmidt's or Landmark?

Whatever you call it, the brewery on West 7th in St. Paul takes on a glow in the winter dusk.

Minneapolis icon

Aren't we glad this sign, overlooking the Hennepin Avenue Bridge, never got torn down? Besides Grain Belt Beer we had Schmidt once, too.

A little preview of tomorrow's post - this funny stencil appears on an electrical box in an alleyway in my neighborhood. Wonder of Excel Energy knows about this or maybe they did it!

Up the hill

I was out in Stillwater recently, a 30-minute drive from St. Paul, to do some early holiday shopping and saw this great "ghost sign" as a visitor to this blog called them a couple of weeks ago.

Banksy in St. Paul?

Just discovered on the back side of an apartment building along Grand Avenue. Looks a lot like our very own Banksy wannabe. First post for this week's theme.

Small town commerce

You get two for the price of one on this last day of photos from places within 100 miles of the Twin Cities. The top one is in Decorah, Iowa and the bottom one in Winona, Minnesota. Both show typical commercial properties in the Midwest from the late 19th and early 20th centuries with just a hint of what the buildings once contained. Here's a previous post from St. Paul, too.

Time for a drink at Palmer's Bar which has been on Cedar near Riverside for over 100 years. Though a 10th anniversary of sorts was recently celebrated.

Stop for gas

Out along the I-494 commercial strip there are plenty of neon signs advertising everything commuters and travelers need, but I like this unlit filling station sign. Final post for this week's theme. What's your guess?

I may have forgotten to reveal last week's theme (softball, biking, kayaking, canoeing, marathon running). You got it now - sports.

Today starts a new theme. This photo was taken in a kind of no man's land just north of University Avenue near the U of M campus where there are a lot of grain elevators/silos/warehouses. Not really sure what they are there for but maybe they have something to do with the St. Paul ag campus.
