Ready for planting

I took a detour on my way back to the Twin Cities from southern Minnesota on one of the first really nice days of this late, but very welcome, spring. Aside from a few isolated patches of snow stuck in dark crannies the countryside is free of winter.

Theme day: Triangles

My Victorian neighborhood has many renovated houses. Some have taken the refurbishment into the New Age.

Ice die

A local bar has strung blocks of ice like so many giant dice to form a beaded wall along their currently unused patio. Pretty soon these will start melting (if we're lucky!).

Just another day of the winter that would not end in downtown St. Paul.

Winter sports fever

The winter Olympics are on and Minnesotans often figure large in the event. But we have our own City of Lakes Loppet where skiers come out en masse to loop around Lake Calhoun - even on a very cold day!

Welcome to the banks of the Mississippi where the Minnehaha tumbles in. Come on in to shelter yourself from the storm.

Theme day: Heights

Stand on the river bluff at the Science Museum of Minnesota and you can look down on a road that winds out from under the bluffs toward the riverside thoroughfare in downtown St. Paul. See other theme day entries here.

Green Line Ghost

A biker pedals along an unopened Green Line light rail station in downtown St. Paul. When, oh when, will the trains start to carry passengers?

I is for Imperial

The eagle is regal - majestic, dignified, imperial. When I was a kid, the eagle was endangered. Now I watch them regularly soar over the Mississippi within the city limits of St. Paul! A great success story. More ABC Wednesday entries here.

ABC Wednesday: E is for Edibles

The alleyways in my neighborhood make good use of south-facing garage walls with baskets of hanging tomato plants. And, they're ripening up about now. More ABC Wednesday entries here.

Busy evening at the Martins

I was at a retreat recently at St John's University in Collegeville and ran across this very busy Purple Martin house on one of the lakes on campus.

Dwight Demaine, Dentist

A perfect 'D' post for today's ABC Wednesday. Not only is Dr. Demaine a dentist but he has turned this Art Deco building in south Minneapolis into his office. What a guy!

Theme day: Street lamps

The railroad tracks run along the river below the bluff in downtown St. Paul where they are lit by these old-fashioned street lamps. Other Theme Days entries from the City Daily Photo project can be see here.

Another Beach Boy

Al Jardin enjoys the sound check at the Minnesota Zoo concert. Sputtering rain did little to dampen the crowd's enthusiasm.
