A local bar has strung blocks of ice like so many giant dice to form a beaded wall along their currently unused patio. Pretty soon these will start melting (if we're lucky!).

Winter sports fever

The winter Olympics are on and Minnesotans often figure large in the event. But we have our own City of Lakes Loppet where skiers come out en masse to loop around Lake Calhoun - even on a very cold day!

It was a frosty, icy, evening down by the tracks.

It's back

We made it later than last year (aside from a dusting in mid-November) but now it's shovel-able. Sigh!

J is for jet

I feel like I might be jinxing (hey, another 'J') our pleasant early fall weather by posting this photo taken last year at the start of a very long winter. Despite the de-icing that day we did not get out of the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport.

It's not over yet

I don't know what these dogs in my neighborhood think, but the rest of us are pretty sick of winter. Hey, it is now officially spring so, give up, Mother Nature.

A river runs

I have it on a reliable source that the Sunrise River - about an hour out of the Twin Cities - is now fully thawed and running wild. Even in January this spunky little stream managed to keep moving! More from the Sunrise here.

Snoozing

Even covered in snow (but not for long, we hope) the benches in Loring Park appeal to nappers.

Serious melting ahead

It may finally be on its way, though the melting could cause trouble for more than a few households this year.

How about those olive eyes? Good choice since coal is pretty tough to come by these days.

Cracking 6PM

There may still be feet (!) of snow but the sun now sets after 6 PM. And when we spring ahead to daylight saving time very soon - next weekend, I think - it'll be even better. If only that shift in daylight hours really was an additional hour tacked onto the day. We need it to get this snow melting faster.

Ready for a dip?

I don't know when these people are going to be able to enjoy their new pool. There's so much snow you can barely see the house from the street. I sure hope they made the right decision.

Wood sculpture

Waiting for the wood stove or maybe just there to catch your eye while on a walk in the woods. This photo is dedicated to a good friend who celebrates a milestone birthday today.

When will it end?

My snowblower gets clogged up in the snow drifts. I think February needs to be even shorter than it is.

Caffeine for coping

I guess the musings about spring from a few days ago were a little premature. Snow bookends our winter from its first wet arrival in November to Presidents' Day. Too bad the kids get today off anyhow because it would be another snow day.

Ramsey House

Yesterday's view of the Alexander Ramsey House was pretty limited. I was more interested in the melting snow on the lacy wrought-iron fence surrounding the property. Here's a more complete view - dirty snow not withstanding.

Muddy puddle

It may just be a muddy puddle to many of you out there, but to us Twin Citians it is the first glorious sign that the end of winter is in sight. Compare this to what I posted in December from the same spot.
