Giants in the earth

We have been having more than our share of thunderstorms this summer. Did you read about the one in Duluth this week? Following a recent downpour I captured this gorgeous sunset at the power station on Highway 280 and Hennepin Avenue.

Winter moon rising

Last month I cheated a bit and posted the lunar eclipse which was not actually visible from the Twin Cities. We are at the full moon again, but this time we see it from an oddly brown St. Paul (still no significant snow).

Take me to your leader

Another view from Highland Park though these are the modern water towers sharing space in the park with the tower from yesterday's post. This view, taken at sunset, makes them appear slightly extra-terrestial.

The images this week complete my 365 days of posting on this blog. It has been a challenge to find something representing the Twin Cities to post every day for a year. I will continue to post periodically notably for ABC Wednesday and the monthly theme days, but the bulk of my photo work will be devoted to other projects.

Goodnight, moon

I confess. This photo was not taken in the Twin Cities because I don't believe this morning's lunar eclipse, nearly 50% covered here, could be seen from the Midwest. Question for you photographers (or astronomers) out there. Where does the ghost moon come from? I could not see it with the naked eye, but a 1-second exposure revealed this phantom orb. A reflection from a cloud?

The summer sky (and our stormy weather) seems to be reflecting the mood at the State Capitol just up the road from this photo.

One of the first of the season - missed the rain while I was in a movie but came out to that eerie post-storm light while the sun was setting. Surely there will be more.

The moons of Ford

The Ford plant in St. Paul got a reprieve a couple of years ago but its days (and moons) are numbered. The assembly plant will close at the end of this year leaving a 125-acre site on the Mississippi River empty and up for grabs.

Longer days

We have slipped past the 5:00 sunset threshold and are heading toward 5:30! Life is good.

Sun after the rain

This is why my camera is woefully inadequate. There was a really cool sunset last night after a rainstorm with the sun just beaming through the dark, billowy clouds on the horizon but this photo doesn't nearly do it justice. I did what I could, but you'll have to use your imagination to fill in the gaps. This was taken from one of the balconies at the Science Museum of Minnesota.
