The Viking Bar has been closed for a while now which is a shame. It was an iconic landmark near the West Bank campus of the University of Minnesota.

Celebrating summer (July theme day)

Here in Minnesota if you don't spend some time during the summer on a lake, you can't really claim citizen status. So, celebrate summer the Minnesota way and see how others around the world are enjoying the season at the City Daily Photo Project.

Shades and a dark suit

It must be a Secret Serviceman. Indeed. President Obama stopped by the local creamery yesterday for an ice cream cone. Most of us on the street never got closer than the nearest security guy.

Unrecognizable

Bent steel

Another iPhone manipulation using TiltShiftGen to focus on the guy walking under the beam and Distressed FX to enhance color and make the shadows pop. This was at the ruins of the mill fire that now makes up part of the Mill City Museum in Minneapolis.

Romantic railroad tracks

A most excellent day spent learning how to use my iPhone camera and a load of really fun apps to make my photos appear something other than the way I took them. This is the Distressed app giving the image - the railroad tracks right next to the Minneapolis Photo Center -  its dreamy appearance. The birds were added!

R is for ravenous

This eagle was devouring a woodchuck and just didn't want to let go as I approached for a close-up.

Theme day: Squares

The Minneapolis Convention Center doesn't have much to commend itself in the architecture category but it served nicely for this month's theme. See others at the City Daily Photo project.

Ready for planting

I took a detour on my way back to the Twin Cities from southern Minnesota on one of the first really nice days of this late, but very welcome, spring. Aside from a few isolated patches of snow stuck in dark crannies the countryside is free of winter.

My Victorian neighborhood has many renovated houses. Some have taken the refurbishment into the New Age.

Ice die

A local bar has strung blocks of ice like so many giant dice to form a beaded wall along their currently unused patio. Pretty soon these will start melting (if we're lucky!).

Winter sports fever

The winter Olympics are on and Minnesotans often figure large in the event. But we have our own City of Lakes Loppet where skiers come out en masse to loop around Lake Calhoun - even on a very cold day!

A biker pedals along an unopened Green Line light rail station in downtown St. Paul. When, oh when, will the trains start to carry passengers?

I is for Imperial

The eagle is regal - majestic, dignified, imperial. When I was a kid, the eagle was endangered. Now I watch them regularly soar over the Mississippi within the city limits of St. Paul! A great success story. More ABC Wednesday entries here.
